What are Regional Councils?

The ISSU’s Regional Council of Schools is an opportunity for student leaders on the ground to come together, debate policy, elect their regional representatives, learn from seasoned professionals on issues most affecting them today and meet new friends also within their region.

This is an exciting time of year for ISSU as we elect 37 new Regional Officers from around Ireland! We will be coming to you, in person soon!

1. How many students are allowed attend on behalf of the school?

   You can send up to 4 students, 2 voters and 2 observers. There is no substantial difference between observers and voter. At one stage in the day, voters will cast a vote on behalf of their school for their choice of electing a Regional Officer. In certain circumstances ISSU may allow you to bring more students if space permits. Please be advised that many venues have capacity limits and ISSU may be restricted, therefore it is best to sign up early. You can email Luke@issu.ie to arrange this.
   

2. Are students required to wear the school uniform on the day?

   ISSU's "official dress code" is clean and casual, something you would wear for a non-uniform day. However it is completely up to the school if they wish to send their students in uniform for pictures.
   

3. Who manages consent forms and Child Protection & Safeguarding?

   ISSU collects parental/guardian consent forms directly from parents as students input their parent/guardian's contact for those under 18. The Designated Liaison Person will be on site at all events and will oversee all child protection on the day. Please note that ISSU's monitoring for child protection only exists within the event times and does not carry over to making their way to and from the event. 
   Parents may elect to allow their children to leave by themselves at the end of the day, if a teacher is accompanying them, the teacher will be responsible for monitoring the students and ensuring departure arrival times. 

4. Is food provided for attendees on the day?

   Yes, each Regional Council food will be included for all attendees on the day. Students will have the opportunity to disclose allergens and needs, we ask that students ensure that no nut and/or shellfish products are brought to events as these are expressly banned. 
   

5. Does ISSU organise busses for pick up/drop off?

   While we would absolutely love to remove this barrier to participation, ISSU is a registered charity and unfortunately does not have capacity to provide busses or reimbursements for travel for students. 
   

6. Is the event in the same place the Regional Council was hosted in last year?

   From time to time, ISSU changes venues for various reasons, it is important that students registered take the time to check out the form and emails sent to them which outlines the exact address of the venues. ISSU unfortunately cannot bear responsibility for students attending previous venues. 
   

7. Are teachers required to attend on the day?

   For Child Protection and Safeguarding purposes, along with passive learning opportunities, ISSU always recommends that a teacher attends with the students, they are free to sit down at the back of the room, grab a coffee etc., while the students engage with the event, however we understand it is a very busy time of year to source cover etc., and as such we are happy for students to make their own way to us. If you plan on attending, please feel free to email luke@issu.ie so you can be counted for in numbers. 
   

8. I’ve decided last minute that I am unable to attend/show up, is it okay to not show up?

   We understand that things can change dramatically, however, we cap our events based on current sign ups as we don't like overcrowding. If you choose not to attend or some of your students pull out, please ensure that you let us know, or the student does as it lowers the numbers on the day where other students could participate instead. Alternatively, students who are "swapping" places need to email luke@issu.ie to ensure their details and consent forms are captured.
